The Season 5 finale of “The Mindy Project” began streaming Tuesday. Wednesday, Hulu announced it’s renewed the show for a sixth season — which will be its final one.
By the end of Season 6, the show — which first aired on FOX — will have lived half its life on Hulu, making it one of the more successful cases of a series changing homes in recent years. The final season will debut in September; there’s no word on an episode count for the final run.
Created by and starring Mindy Kaling, “The Mindy Project” has followed the romantic and professional life of Dr. Mindy Lahiri and her co-workers. The show also stars Ike Barinholtz, Ed Weeks, Xosha Roquemore, Beth Grant and Fortune Feimster.
“It has been an honor and a joy to work with Mindy and the entire creative team behind ‘The Mindy Project,'” Hulu’s head of content, Craig Erwich, says in a statement. “This series has been part of Hulu since we launched the service and, thanks to Mindy’s incredibly unique voice and vision, has remained one of our most popular and beloved series over the past five years.”
Hulu had streamed the series after its initial FOX run as part of the service’s output deal with the network (which is a part owner of Hulu). When FOX canceled the show after the 2014-15 season, Hulu picked it up as an original.
Like all streaming services, Hulu doesn’t release ratings figures for its shows. “The Mindy Project” joins these series that have been renewed for 2017-18 and beyond.
