With the order of nine additional episodes, “The Resident” will officially air a full second season in 2018-19.

The full season pickup from FOX comes just two days after the series aired the third episode of its sophomore season, where it maintained the same 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 for the second week in a row. NBC’s own freshman medical drama, “New Amsterdam,” was given a full season order today as well.

“[Executive producers] Amy Holden Jones, Todd Harthan and the amazing team behind The Resident have brilliantly offered viewers the ability to see the medical industry through a different lens,” said Fox Entertainment President, Michael Thorn. “We can’t wait to watch the exceptional cast as they continue to roam the halls of Chastain Memorial Hospital.”

Created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, the series stars Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, Manish Dayal, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Bruce Greenwood, Tasso Feldman, and more. It follows an idealistic young doctor who begins his first day under the supervision of a tough, brilliant senior resident, who pulls the curtain back on all of the good and evil of modern day medicine.

Airing Monday nights, “The Resident” has been averaging a solid 1.0 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo with 4.89 million viewers, actually up slightly from its first season’s average (1.0, 4.54 million). With “9-1-1” as its lead-out every week, the pair of shows have provided FOX with a steady Monday night lineup so far this season, and should it maintain its current average, will throughout the rest of the 2018-19 season as well.
