His adult self may be saying goodbye to TV this year, but viewers will still be seeing plenty of Sheldon Cooper in the future.

Announced today, CBS has officially renewed its “Big Bang Theory” prequel/spin-off, “Young Sheldon,” for two more seasons. The news of which comes as “Big Bang” is nearing its conclusion, with the long-running comedy set to air its series finale this May.

Created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, “Young Sheldon” follows the younger version of Jim Parsons’ “Big Bang Theory” character, as he and his family tackle unique issues that challenge his own social impairments. It stars Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, and more.

“Thanks to Chuck Lorre’s and [co-creator/showrunner] Steve Molaro’s outstanding creative leadership, ‘Young Sheldon’ has been a powerful performer for the network with an audience that towers over most of the television landscape,” said CBS Entertainment President, Kelly Kahl.

“The Coopers are portrayed by an amazing cast, and we are looking forward to having the gifted writing staff mine even more of Sheldon’s hilarious backstory and the warm family dynamic that has made this comedy a favorite with audiences for the past two seasons,” added Thom Sherman, Senior Executive VP of Programming.

The renewal comes as little of a surprise, not only because of the show’s own impressive ratings performance, but also because it remains CBS’ most likely and viable to choice to try and fill the sizable hole in its schedule that’ll be left after the end of “The Big Bang Theory” this season.

The series has been averaging a solid 1.8 live + same day rating in adults 18-49 so far this season, making it CBS’ second-highest-rated show (behind only “Big Bang”), and will almost surely become the network’s no. 1 title when it returns for its third season this fall.

“Young Sheldon” airs Thursday nights on CBS.
