ABC had 6 of the week’s Top 10 biggest broadcast gainers in TV playback among Adults 18-49 (more than any other network): Modern Family (+2.1 rating points) – #3, How to Get Away with Murder (+1.7) – #4, Grey’s Anatomy (+1.4) – #6, while Castle (+1.1), black-ish (+1.1) and Once Upon a Time (+1.1) all tied for #10.

 

After holding steady with the prior week in the L+SD numbers, ABC’s Castle ended up week to week in the L+7 numbers by 4% among Adults 18-49 (2.7 rating vs. 2.6 rating) to match its strongest rating since mid-November – since 11/17/14. Castle gained +1.1 rating points in TV playback among young adults (from a 1.6 in L+SD to a 2.7 in L+7).

 

Growing to a 2.5 in Adults 18-49 (up +0.7 rating points from a 1.8 in L+SD), ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat matched its 2nd-best L+7 rating yet for a regular episode. In the L+SD numbers, the new ABC sitcom was down 1-tenth of a rating week to week. Also on Tuesday, the season finale of Marvel’s Agent Carter posted bigger growth in TV playback week to week in Adults 18-49 to hold steady in the L+7 numbers (with a 2.2). In the L+SD numbers, the new ABC drama was off 1-tenth of a rating from the prior week. And in the 10pm hour, ABC’s Forever nearly doubled its L+SD rating (+90%) to grow to a 1.9 among Adults 18-49, up over the prior week for its 2nd consecutive telecast (+6%) to its highest L+7 rating since mid-January – since 1/13/15. In the L+SD numbers, Forever was down 1-tenth of a rating from the previous week.

 

On Wednesday, ABC’s The Goldbergs shot up to a 3.5 rating in the L+7 numbers (up +1.0 rating points from a 2.5 in L+SD) to tie Fox’s American Idol among Adults 18-49. In the L+SD ratings, the ABC sitcom trailed the Fox show by 2-tenths of a rating point. Meanwhile, ABC’s black-ish grew +1.1 rating points over its L+SD number to a 3.3 in Adults 18-49, pushing it 6% ahead of the prior week’s telecast in the L+7 ratings (3.3 rating vs. 3.1 rating). In the L+SD ratings, black-ish was even week to week in the young adult demo.

 

Season-to-Date TV Playback (9/22/14-3/1/15):

Based on L+7 ratings through 23 weeks of the 2014-15 season, ABC is #1 in Nielsen’s non-sports Adult 18-49 averages (2.3 rating), leading CBS (+5% – 2.2), NBC (+10% – 2.1) and Fox (+21% – 1.9). ABC grows to a 2.3 rating among Adults 18-49 in Nielsen’s non-sports Adult 18-49 averages, up year to year by 5% (2.2 for 9/23/13-3/2/14), while CBS (-4%), NBC (-13%) and Fox (-10%) are each declining.

 

Based on TV playback data for the 2014-15 season, ABC’s Modern Family (+2.2 rating points) and How to Get Away with Murder (+2.0) hold the #2 and #3 spots, respectively, among broadcast gainers in Adults 18-49. In fact, HTGAWM stands as the season’s biggest broadcast drama gainer among young adults.

ABC’s HTGAWM is the season’s biggest gainer for any freshman series among Adults 18-49 (+2.0 rating points), topping the L+7 gains of runner-up Fox’s Empire (+1.9).

Among Adults 18-49 in the L+7 ratings, ABC has the #1 drama on Thursday with HTGAWM (5.0 rating), the #1 show on Friday with Shark Tank (2.6) and the #1 broadcast series on Sunday with Once Upon a Time (3.7).

 

Several ABC’s returning series are seeing bigger percentage gains among Adults 18-49 from L+SD to L+7 this year than last: The Bachelor (+30% vs. +29%), Castle (+69% vs. +60%), The Goldbergs (+45% vs. +44%), Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (+76% vs. +59%), Modern Family (+67% vs. +58%), Revenge (+91% vs. +63%), Scandal (+50% vs. +48%) and Shark Tank (+37% vs. +30%).
