(WASHINGTON, D.C. — March 13, 2014) In April 2013, chaos erupted in Boston near the finish line of one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathons. It was the worst terrorist attack on the United States since 9/11 and led to one of the most extensive and public manhunts in American history. Now, as the one-year anniversary approaches, National Geographic Channel announces a special two-hour event, Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers, premiering Sunday, April 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. With unprecedented access to the FBI, Boston Police Department, survivors of the bombings and those caught up in the manhunt, National Geographic Channel presents a powerful account of the unforgettable week, told in the city’s own words. First-person interviews with the key players, woven together with gripping reenactments, reveal a remarkable story of bravery in the face of tragedy. Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers will also premiere globally on National Geographic Channel beginning in April 2014, in 171 countries and 45 languages. “This event is still an open wound for those who lived through the nightmare, and even for those who shockingly watched it play out in the media,” says Executive Vice President of Programming Heather Moran. “This film is a conclusive account of the event as told by both victims and the brave men and women who were on the ground passionately fighting to bring their city back from the brink. Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers is truly a heroes’ story.”
Produced by Raw TV (producers of National Geographic Channel’s critically acclaimed Locked Up Abroad and American Blackout), Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers is the definitive account of the events that shook Boston, as told — in some cases for the first time — by those on the front lines of the hunt for an unknown enemy. For them, the questions swarmed: Who was responsible for killing three people and injuring 264? Why did they do it? And what were they planning next?
Using news media footage, amateur-shot video, firsthand accounts and dramatic recreations, National Geographic Channel and Raw take viewers through those tense days as information unfolded piece by piece to investigators, the media and the public at large.
Having obtained unprecedented access to the Mayor’s Office, Boston Police Department, the Governor’s Office and to key state players, Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers will tell moving stories of personal tragedy and heroism that emerged from the horror and carnage of the bomb blasts. It will also reveal little-known aspects of how the authorities responded to the attacks and tried to keep the city’s citizens safe while hunting for those responsible. And riveting accounts from survivors provide rare insights into the horrors of the attack.
Original interviews include former Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino; Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts; William B. Evans, former superintendent and current commissioner of the Boston Police Department; Edward F. Davis, former commissioner of the Boston Police Department; and Richard C. DesLauriers, former special agent in charge, FBI, Boston Division.
In one of the first interviews conducted for Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers, Boston Police Department commissioner Bill Evans recounts: “I had to step up to the role on the street. I was making sure our officers were securing all that evidence. We had bodies. Pieces of bombs. We had to look at cameras. You can imagine the amount of witnesses we had to interview. We were trying to preserve the crime scene and get any lead we could.”
Raw TV executive producer Louise Norman says, “This film takes us right to the heart of what it was like in Boston during those horrific five days last April. For the first time, the city of Boston is giving us inside access to one of the biggest manhunts in modern times. It has been a huge privilege to have those closest to the tragedy open up to us about the events that day and the gripping manhunt that followed.”
Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers is produced by Raw TV for National Geographic Channel.
