For the first week of the April ratings period, Turner Broadcasting networks continued to dominate the charts, with TBS, Adult Swim and TNT accounting for three of basic cable’s Top 10 networks in primetime and total day delivery of adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and total viewers.
TBS won the primetime race as basic cable’s #1 network with adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and total viewers, while Adult Swim took top honors in total day with adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. Adult Swim also scored a second-place finish behind TBS among adults 18-34 in primetime, while TBS came in second behind Adult Swim with adults 18-49 in total day. In addition, Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network continued its winning ways as the #1 network on all of television in total day and early prime among targeted kid and boy demos, and truTV scored double-digit audience growth over the prior week.
On the sports front, Turner Sports closed out another spectacular year of NBA on TNT, topping the charts with cable’s #1 regular-season coverage of the NBA for the 2014-15 season. Turner Sports also scored record-breaking deliveries across the entire NBA Digital portfolio.
Propelled in part by coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, TBS extended it chart-topping Q1 success by ranking as basic cable’s #1 network in primetime delivery of adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and total viewers for the week of March 30.
The memorable series finale of TBS’s Cougar Town brought in a combined audience of 2.7 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery for the March 31 telecast and encores, including 1.6 million adults 18-49 and 621,000 adults 18-34. For its sixth and final season, Cougar Town reached an average of 3.2 million viewers per episode across TBS’s television, digital and mobile platforms.
The March 30 spring finale of TBS’s American Dad! scored solid growth compared to the prior week’s episode, with an audience of 1.5 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery (+11%). In key demos, American Dad! drew 1 million adults 18-49 (+4% vs. the prior week) and 634,000 adults 18-34 (+7%). Across all of TBS’s television, digital and mobile platforms, American Dad! has reached an average of 3.8 million viewers in its current season. The show will return with new episodes beginning May 18.
TBS’s new series Meet the Smiths, starring NBA legend Kenny Smith, his wife and their blended family, tipped off with a combined audience of 1.5 million viewers and 819,000 adults 18-49 in Live + 7 delivery for its April 3 premiere telecast and weekend encores. Across TBS’s multiple platforms, the first episode of Meet the Smith reached a total of 1.7 million viewers.
Adult Swim ranked as basic cable’s #1 network in total day delivery of adults and men 18-24, 18-34 and 18-49.
On Friday, April 3, The Jack and Triumph Show (11:30p) ranked as basic cable’s #1 program in its time period among adults 18-24 and 18-34, and Childrens Hospital (12a) outperformed the prior week’s episode by +17% among men 18-34.
The season premiere of China IL (11:30p) on Sunday, April 5, ranked as basic cable’s #1 program in its timeslot among all key adults and men 18-24, 18-34 and 18-49.
Drawing strength from its coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship and the NBA, TNT ranked as one of basic cable’s Top 5 networks in primetime for the week among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.
NBA on TNT Thursday night doubleheaders – the network’s showcase games of the week – averaged 1.8 million total viewers and a 1.2 U.S. HH rating during the 2014-15 regular season to deliver the most-viewed NBA game coverage on cable television. The network also garnered the two most-viewed NBA game telecasts on cable television this season and three of the Top 5 most-viewed games overall: Cleveland vs. Knicks (Oct. 30, with an average of 4 million viewers); L.A. Lakers vs. Chicago (Dec. 25, with an average of 3.9 million viewers to rank as the most-viewed primetime Christmas Day game of all time); and L.A. Clippers vs. Golden State (Dec. 25, with an average of 3.1 million viewers).
Additionally, the league’s premium events airing on TNT continue to drive tremendous audiences, including TNT’s exclusive presentation of the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend, which delivered the top two sports programs of the week. The network’s coverage of the NBA All-Star Game registered an average of 7.2 million viewers to rank as the top sports program of the week.
NBA Digital continued to deliver strong results across its multimedia platforms – including record-setting numbers across its entire digital portfolio – during the 2014-15 regular season.
NBA TV‘s highlights include significant increases across its original programming including total viewership gains for The Starters (+13%), Open Court (+50%) and NBA Inside Stuff (+8%). And the season’s two premieres of One-on-One with Ahmad Rashad were up by +117% over last season.
NBA.com and NBA Mobile achieved all-time records, with more than 16.7 billion page views and 4.2 billion video views combined, each +9% over last year. The NBA Game Time App received a record 7.4 million downloads, +32% over 2013-14; and NBA League Pass accumulated a record number of subscriptions, +44% (with premium subs +87%) over last year. In addition, NBA Mobile page views grew by +25%, while video views grew by +105%.
The NBA on TNT’s social media audience – Facebook fans, Twitter followers and Instagram followers – has grown +80% since March 2014, while the NBA TV social media audience has grown by +119% over last year.
For the first week of April, Cartoon Network ranked as television’s #1 network in Total Day delivery (6a-8p) among kids 6-11 and all key boys. Total Day charted significant double-digit delivery gains, with kids 2-11 up by 38%, kids 6-11 by 43%, and kids 9-14 by 41%.
Thursday night’s premiere of Teen Titans Go! (6p) ranked as television’s #1 telecast of the week among kids 2-11 and 6-11. Steven Universe (5:30p) was the #1 telecast of the week among kids and boys 9-14. All Thursday night premieres showed double and triple-digit growth among all key demos vs. the same time period last year
Cartoon Network programming accounted for six of the Top 10 telecasts of the week among kids 6-11, and every Top 10 telecast among boys 6-11.
truTV’s primetime audience for the week of March 30 grew by +19% in total viewers compared to the prior week.
Leading the pack for truTV, the hit series Impractical Jokers delivered 1.8 million total viewers, with superb rankings in key demos. The show ranked among basic cable’s Top 5 programs in its timeslot with adults 18-49 and scored Top 10 timeslot rankings among total viewers and adults 18-34. Impractical Jokers continues to be a hit across genders, with Top 5 timeslot rankings among women 18-34 & women 18-49 and Top 10 rankings with men 18-34 & men 18-49.
