I keep seeing ads for the Peel on Comcast SportsNet while watching Giants games. I’d heard of the Peel before — a device that allows you to use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control for your TV.  But after seeing about 500 commercials for it, I took another look (behold the power of advertising!). Though it has the appearance of cool, it doesn’t seem particularly useful.

If you’re not sure what to watch on television, you can buy a Peel for $100 (the Peel iPhone app is free, but the device that allows you to use the iPhone as a remote is ~$100). Alternatively you could probably post a blog comment here or on any other television website and probably have someone tell you what to watch for free.

While Peel will control certain aspects of television viewing, it is more about discovery than traditional browsing.  While I’m a fan of the iPhone as a remote control in certain one off situations, particularly for TV viewing and particularly for DVR viewing I’m not interested in using my iPhone touch screen regularly as a remote control device.

The iPhone app looks pretty, but…give me the (admittedly more expensive) Logitech Harmony One any day. I’d also take the TiVo or even the Comcast set top box remote over the Peel for a simple reason: I can control those remotes with one hand without looking at them. There’s absolutely no hope of me ever being able to do that with my iPhone or iPod touch.

Any Peel users out there? Is there something I’m missing?
