Golf Visionaries Chronicled in One-Hour CBS Sports Special

PGA TOUR 2013: Visionaries presented by Visionworks airs June 30 at 2 p.m. ET


PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL – While golf remains steeped in rich history and tradition, it also has been adapted to modern influences through the foresight and creativity of the game’s leading innovators.

PGA TOUR 2013: Visionaries presented by Visionworks, a one-hour CBS Sports special that airs Sunday, June 30 at 2 p.m. ET, chronicles the stories of some of the game’s most creative minds who have helped define golf’s modern revolution.

Featured in the special are:

Gary Player – The Black Knight was golf’s first global player. The ‘wee laddie’ from South Africa stood toe-to-toe with legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus and collected more than 165 worldwide wins, including nine major championships. Player also revolutionized fitness and travel in golf, which has a lasting impact even on today’s PGA TOUR stars.

Pete Dye – The World Golf Hall of Fame course designer introduced art and intrigue into his designs. Dye’s penchant for visual intimidation mixed with classic style and risk-reward elements make him one of the today’s most successful designers. Dye’s crowning achievement is TPC Sawgrass, home of THE PLAYERS Championship. This inspiring design resonates most with its famed “Island Green;” the most distinctive and talked about hole in the world.

Tiger Woods – The first billion dollar athlete, Woods burst onto the sports landscape in 1996, with his now famous “Hello World” press conference. Now 37, Woods’ sphere of influence is unmatched in any sport. He has virtually single-handedly changed golf … from athleticism, marketing, nutrition, and sheer passion. Woods became the most recognizable athlete in the world and many of today’s young stars on the PGA TOUR credit Tiger with making golf a sport that other athletes want to play.

Greg Norman – During the decade of the 1980s, Norman spent a then-record 331 straight weeks as the No. 1 player in the world. His 20 PGA TOUR wins include 2 major championships, but it is his visionary style both on and off the course that truly changed the game. “The Shark” was one of the first and most successful golf brands unto himself, and he parlayed that into a multi-faceted, multi-million dollar business that spread throughout the golf industry. Through the many ups and downs in his brilliant career the Norman name speaks for itself.

The show also will showcase other visionaries like former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman, who helped transform the PGA TOUR and golf from a niche sport, rarely seen on television, to one of the biggest sports and entertainment brands in the world. Beman also framed the model used today for all PGA TOUR tournaments to give back to charity, which is approaching $2 billion in all-time donations. There’s also legendary CBS Sports executive producer Frank Chirkinian, whose innovations such as microphones on the course, multiple and varied camera angles, and scores in relation to par, helped bring the modern game of golf to the television masses.

PGA TOUR 2013: Visionaries presented by Visionworks has been produced in high definition by PGA TOUR Entertainment and will air prior to CBS Sports’ final-round coverage of the AT&T National on Sunday, June 30, at 2 p.m. ET.
