Watch!, the bimonthly celebrity/lifestyle magazine published by CBS Television, today announced a new addition to its masthead: Champers, a Persian cat who will serve as the magazine’s social media ambassador. Champers will post daily thoughts and updates to Twitter (@CBSWatchCat), Facebook (CBS Watch Cat) and Instagram (@CBSWatchCat). Frank DeCaro, frequent contributor to Watch! and host of “The Frank DeCaro Show” on Sirius XM Satellite Radio, will serve as the official voice of Champers.
“I’ve always been furry and adorable, and a little catty, so being the voice of Champers is a perfect fit,” said DeCaro. “The only problem is that now, when I type, my dog looks at me funny.”
“I’m pleased to be offered this opportunity, even though it will require me to be awake more than my usual 27 minutes per day,” said Champers. “In addition, being part of Watch! will give me a new source of high-quality paper to chew on.”
Numerous celebrities and brands have used pets as official mascots, from Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and his cat, Choupette, to Morris the Cat for 9Lives. Grumpy Cat has become a bona fide celebrity, and even TV shows like ELEMENTARY (where Sherlock Holmes’ turtle Clive has started his own Twitter feed) have adopted animal media personalities.
“This is a great way to differentiate our magazine and add the kind of warm, sweet personality that only a cat could deliver,” said Jeremy Murphy, Vice President, Communications, CBS and Editor-in-Chief, Watch! “Pets are not only lovable but a great branding vehicle that connect with consumers. I’m confident Champers will develop into quite the celebrity, and bring a quirky point of view to our pages and platforms.”
“We think this campaign affords us new opportunities to build brand awareness for Watch! across multiple platforms, and attract new advertisers and sponsors with a unique idea that invites integration,” said Michael Rizzi, Vice President and Publisher, Watch! “Clients today are looking for differentiation, and the more innovative, bold idea you have, the more interest you receive from marketers. This definitely fills that mold.”
A Tiffany cat for a Tiffany network, Champers lives and works in New York City, often accompanying editors to photo shoots and Watch! events. In what little spare time he has, Champers enjoys pawing through celebrity weekly magazines, texting with his friend Choupette, playing with paper shopping bags from Bloomingtails, watching his favorite CBS shows (“Pussycat of Interest” and “Two and a Half Maine Coons”) and taking the occasional purr-lates class. Champers, which is fun shorthand for “champagne,” was the star kitten of a litter that included his siblings Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot, Rose and the black cat of the family, Shiraz.
Writer/performer Frank DeCaro is heard every weekday morning across North America on The Frank DeCaro Show on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Before that, he was best known for his six-and-a-half-year stint as the flamboyant movie critic on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” As a journalist, DeCaro wrote the pioneering gay humor column “Frank’s Place” for New York Newsday before going on to write the “Style Over Substance” column for The New York Times. He is the author of four books: The Dead Celebrity Cookbook, Christmas in Tinseltown, Unmistakably Mackie and A Boy Named Phyllis: A Suburban Memoir. A graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, DeCaro is married to writer Jim Colucci, the author of Golden Girls Forever! He refuses to blog, but you can follow him on Twitter at @frankdecaroshow. He gives good tweet.
