(Hollywood, CA – October 26, 2011) Tune in to the Emmy Award-winning syndicated series THE DOCTORS (check local listings) on Thursday, October 27, 2011, to learn about the harrowing, real-life story of a Vermont mother who suffered a brutal and disfiguring attack at the hands of her estranged husband.  Against all odds, this mother of two survived, and is now awaiting approval for a rare face transplant procedure to help restore her quality of life.
In 2007, Carmen Tarleton suffered a life-altering attack – beaten with a baseball bat and doused with industrial-strength lye, she endured months in a coma only to awake nearly unrecognizable, with burns over 80% of her body.  She pushed through the pain, grief and the humiliation of losing her looks, her sight, her hearing in one ear, as well as the ability to eat, drink and smile. Carmen joins THE DOCTORS as she takes the next critical steps in her journey and prepares for the possibility of a full-face transplant.
“Carmen is a courageous woman who endured more than most could even imagine, said Carla Pennington, executive producer of THE DOCTORS. “Her grace and compassion, coupled with the act of forgiving her attacker, really inspired us to share her story with America and encourage our viewers to take part in Carmen’s recovery.”
THE DOCTORS will speak with Dr. Bohdan Pomahac of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who pioneered the rare face transplant surgery.  Dr. Bohdan, along with co-hosts Dr. Travis Stork and Dr. Drew Ordon, will take viewers through the step-by-step process of the procedure: from finding a donor to the eventual 17-hour operation that will require multiple surgical teams to complete.
If approved, Carmen Tarleton would be among only a handful of people in the world to have undergone the rare procedure.
THE DOCTORS also encourage viewers to donate to Carmen through the Dr. Phil Foundation, which will contribute all proceeds to her medical and other expenses. Go to for more information.
THE DOCTORS, from Stage 29 Productions, and distributed by CBS Television Distribution, launched in 2008 with an esteemed group of professionals that includes ER physician Dr. Travis Stork; OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson; cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon, pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears, doctor of psychology Wendy Walsh, as well as health and wellness expert Jillian Michaels.  The show has been heralded for providing viewers with entertaining and easily digestible information that is essential to overall health.
Tune in this Thursday, October 27 to hear Carmen’s powerful story of grace, courage, and survival.
