STAND-UP COMEDIAN RON G TAKES HOME TOP HONORS AT NBCUNIVERSAL’S 10TH ANNUAL ‘STAND-UP NBC’ COMIC SEARCH
First Place Winner Receives One-Year Holding Deal with NBCUniversal
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – January 7, 2014 – Comedian Ron G took home top honors at NBCUniversal’s tenth annual “Stand-Up NBC” comedy showcase held recently at the Improv in Los Angeles, California. The event was hosted by actor/writer/comedian Deon Cole (“Deon Cole’s Black Box,” “Conan”) and capped a talent search that spanned Austin, San Diego and New York in an effort to find the funniest comics of diverse backgrounds in the country.
With the win, Ron G was signed to a one-year talent holding deal with NBCUniversal.
“As it has for the nine previous years, NBCUniversal’s Stand Up NBC talent search culminated in a group of truly talented and very funny comics,” said Grace Wu, Executive Vice President, Casting, NBCUniversal. “Each of them brought a refreshing and hilarious perspective to the showcase. Congratulations to Ron; we are excited to offer him a talent holding deal and look forward to hearing more of his unique voice in the upcoming season.”
“It is very gratifying to see how this initiative continues to grow each year and serve as a launching pad for many careers” said Karen Horne, Vice President, Programming Talent Development & Inclusion NBC Universal. ” Stand-Up NBC is one of NBC’s preeminent talent development programs, and we are delighted to see alumni achieve great success and make their mark in entertainment.”
Selected finalists also earned the honor of joining the touring company of the “Stand-Up NBC College Tour.” The 2013 finalists – in addition to Ron G – included Chris Cubas, Andrew Fisher, Joyelle Johnson, Drew Lynch, Brandon Marshall, Daniel Tirado, Julio Torres, Chinedu Unaka and Chastity Washington.
In partnership with the National Association for Campus Activities (N.A.C.A.), the tour is expected to perform at more than 50 college campuses nationwide. Additionally, select finalists will be featured in February at the N.A.C.A National convention in Boston, Massachusetts.
Ron G, who describes his comedy as “high energy and clever with an urban flare,” graduated with a dual degree in finance and management from the University of South Carolina. He quickly decided he didn’t fit into the corporate world, and at his cousin’s urging got up on stage for the first time in Atlanta, GA and got booed severely. He calls that “the best and worst day of my life – the day I fell in love with comedy.” Upon moving to Los Angeles to further his comedic and acting career, he became a finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” Bill Bellamy’s “Who’s Got Jokes” and received the prestigious title “College Comic of the Year” award in 2010. With his star rising Ron is regularly seen on Vh1’s Talking Heads Shows, as a commentator for BET’s “Don’t Sleep,” and will soon grace the big screen as leading man in the new family comedy, “Margarine Wars” opposite the legendary actors Doris Roberts and Robert Loggia.
