The Word’s Best in Competitive Sword Fighting Use Skill, Speed and Strategy in Their Quest for Gold

Los Angeles (August 6, 2013) – Universal Sports Network will present 24 hours of world-class fencing action from the 2013 FIE World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from August 7 through 12 both on air and live online at UniversalSports.com. Descending on Budapest are more than 800 athletes from 100 nations competing with foil, epee and saber weapons in both individual and team events.

Featuring 15 members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team, Team USA is headlined by four Olympic medalists and six former Senior World medalists. Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.), the #2-ranked women’s saber fencer in the world, will make her 14th appearance at the Senior Worlds this year – an event she has won twice as an individual (2009 and 2010) and twice as a team member (2000 and 2005).

On the Olympic program since the 1896 Games in Athens, the sport of fencing is rich with history and has been practiced for thousand as of years. Modern day fencing began as a form of military training and became a sport around the 15th century after which bloody and sometimes fatal duels were common.

Considered a sport, art and military science, fencing’s popularity is often associated with sword fighting scenes on television shows and in Hollywood movies featuring dueling heroes and villains. This year’s FIE World Fencing Championships on national television in the United States demonstrates the increased interest in the sport.
