For the Fourth Consecutive Season, “World News” Narrowing Demo Margin (-18%) with NBC


For the week of February 17, 2014, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 8.012 million Total Viewers and a 1.8 rating/7 share/2.212 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.

On Friday (2/21/14), “World News” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54, leading NBC’s “Nightly News” on the night by +31,000 demo viewers (1.960 million vs. 1.929 million). “World News” victory represented its first daily win over “Nightly News” during a Winter Olympics since Torino (2/23/06).

“World News” narrowed its week-to-week gaps with “NBC Nightly News” in Total Viewers (-14% – 2.386 million vs. 2.770 million) and Adults 25-54 (-50% – 398,000 vs. 790,000).

During week two of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, “World News” cut its margins with “NBC Nightly News” compared to its margins in week two of the 2010 Winter Olympics by double-digits in both Total Viewers (-21% – 2.386 million vs. 3.007 million) and Adults 25-54 (-60% – 398,000 vs. 1.000 million).

Season to date, “World News” is up versus the same point last season in both Total Viewers (+3%) and Adults 25-54 (+3%), delivering its most-watched season in 5 years and best news demo number in 3 years – since the 2008-09 and the 2010-11 seasons, respectively. “World News” also stands as the only evening newscast to improve its demo performance from the previous season compared to “CBS Evening News” (-6%) and “NBC Nightly News” (flat).

In addition, “World News” is narrowing its season margin with “NBC Nightly News” in Adults 25-54 by double digits (-18% – 283,000 vs. 347,000) compared to its season margin from the same point last year. In fact, cutting its Adults 25-54 gap for the 4th consecutive season, “World News” is seeing its closest news demo performance with the NBC program in 6 years – since the 2007-08 season.

“World News” has more than doubled its Adults 25-54 lead over “CBS Evening News” versus its year-ago season lead (+104% – 347,000 vs. 170,000).

For the week, “ABC World News” beat the “CBS Evening News” by 883,000 Total Viewers and by 402,000 Adults 25-54.

NOTE: Due to President’s Day on Monday (2/17/14), CBS’ “Evening News” was coded as a special and is excluded from its weekly averages.  CBS’ program averages are based on 4 days (Tues-Fri).
