Update: “Quantico’s” initial back-six order was later upped to nine episodes, bringing it to a full 22. Some changes have been made to this post to reflect that.

Based solely on its its ratings declines of late, “Quantico” is not in a great spot. But nonetheless, it remains in a pretty good position for a renewal.

Part of that is that ABC has bigger issues to deal with. “Quantico” is the only one of the network’s freshman dramas with a pulse, even if it’s growing fainter. None of the new dramas lined up for the back half of the season feel like instant winners either.

ABC also probably doesn’t want a repeat of the bloodbath of 2014, when it axed more than three fourths of its new shows. If “Quantico” can maintain even a semblance of stability in its spring run, it will be back.

Note: Final nationals for Sunday, Nov. 29 were not available as of posting time. Ratings and Index numbers for “Once Upon a Time” and “Quantico” and the network average will be updated when the ratings are released.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode live+same-day adults 18-49 average rating by the live+same-day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. Why live+same-day ratings? Because they correlate very closely with the rarely disclosed C3 ratings (viewing of commercials within three days of air), which are the basis for most ad deals.

Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays tend to be renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
