ABC head Paul Lee said he has plans to keep “Castle” going past this season, even if stars Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion — who, you know, plays the guy the show is named for — were to depart. (Neither actor is signed past this season.)

Here’s a question: Why? After eight seasons, 170-plus episodes and what will be a rather nice afterlife in syndication and streaming, is there really much more value to be wrung out of the franchise?

From a ratings standpoint, it sure doesn’t look that way. “Castle” hasn’t posted above a 1.2 same-day rating all season, and that’s not likely to change as we hit spring and TV viewing in general goes down. No eight-year-old network drama is cheap, and this show would likely get more expensive with whatever it took to get its two leads back for a ninth season.

“Castle” has been a dependable performer for ABC for the better part of a decade. The network should do the show (and itself) a solid by setting an end date.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode live+same-day adults 18-49 average rating by the live+same-day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. Why live+same-day ratings? Because they correlate very closely with the rarely disclosed C3 ratings (viewing of commercials within three days of air), which are the basis for most ad deals.

Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays tend to be renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
