Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2010-11 season in May, 2011. (includes results from January 3 – May 15, 2011):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Whole Truth cancelled
My Generation cancelled
Detroit 1-8-7 cancelled 0.49
No Ordinary Family cancelled 0.62
Off The Map cancelled 0.70
Happy Endings renewed 0.78
V cancelled 0.79
Brothers & Sisters cancelled 0.79
Better With You cancelled 0.80
Mr. Sunshine cancelled 0.92
The Middle renewed 0.98
Cougar Town renewed 0.98
Body Of Proof renewed 0.98
Private Practice renewed 1.01
Castle renewed 1.14
Desperate Housewives renewed 1.29
Grey’s Anatomy renewed 1.64
Modern Family renewed 1.80

The marginally positive renewal call for Brothers & Sisters was the only thing that kept the Renew / Cancel Index from batting 1.000 on ABC show predictions this season.

On the plus side, the marginally positive renewal call for Happy Endings kept me from dropping two. One thing I may toy with next season is a fudge factor for the 10pm timeslot, like we try and do for Friday shows.

The cancellation and renewal calls for ABC shows otherwise all went as predicted.

With that the Index bids the 2010-11 ABC season adieu, there will be no more ABC Renew / Cancel posts until September, but expect a general post in the  next couple weeks on some potential changes for next season’s Renew / Cancel Index.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
