Before getting into this week’s main discussion, some notable updates have been made to CBS’ chart since the Bear’s last post…
Late last week, the network renewed “God Friended Me,” “The Neighborhood,” and “FBI” for second seasons, all of which the Bear had called likely renewals. “Magnum P.I.” received a season 2 renewal as well, which the Bear had called a tossup, and could have seen going either way.
Unlike with “Magnum” though, the Bear feels much more confident saying “Mom” will be renewed for a seventh season. The show is down slightly from its previous season’s L+SD average, but has been holding fairly well so far this season, and has remained a strong Thursday performer for the network.
It’s currently the network’s third-highest-rated comedy, behind only “Big Bang Theory” and “Young Sheldon,” and with the former ending this year, will likely become CBS’ no. 2 comedy among adults 18-49.
There is the possibility that some behind-the-scenes decisions could impact the show’s future, with both of its stars currently engaged in contract negotiations with CBS and WBTV, but from a ratings standpoint, “Mom” doesn’t have any reason to worry about its continued future.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the amount above (or below) a replacement-level rating — i.e., the expected adults 18-49 rating of an emergency fill-in show should a series be canceled. For the 2018-19 season, replacement level is a 0.6 same-day rating in adults 18-49 for the Big 4 networks and a 0.1 for The CW. (Read more here.) The index number is taken by subtracting 0.6 (or 0.1) from a show’s average same-day rating.
Friday scripted shows (denoted with an “F” above) on the Big 4 have average ratings about 30 percent lower than those of other nights, therefore their ratings are multiplied by 1.43 (1/0.7, or 70 percent) before subtracting the replacement-level number.
Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.
(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
