Before getting into the main CBS discussion today, the Bear feels it important to note that just one week after predicting it would be renewed, the network picked up “Mom” for two more seasons yesterday afternoon. So with that announcement, the Bear’s correct streak for this season continues to hold strong.
But while the Bear felt confident in “Mom’s” fate, he feels much less certain about the future of “Madam Secretary.”
The fifth-season CBS drama is the network’s lowest-rated show of the season, with a 0.6 live + same day average among adults 18-49. However, as has been previously noted, the series has some profitable streaming and syndication deals in place which have kept it alive in the past, and could very well do so again this year.
Taking into account its current ratings performance, and its five-season run on the network, the Bear has a feeling CBS could choose to end the series this year. But given the show’s ability to shrug off even the most disappointing of ratings, it’s equally possible that “Madam Secretary” could return again in the 2019-20 TV season.
Unlike most other shows this season, “Madam Secretary’s” fate seems to rest solely on its behind-the-scenes production dealings rather than its ratings performance, which means it could easily go either way.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the amount above (or below) a replacement-level rating — i.e., the expected adults 18-49 rating of an emergency fill-in show should a series be canceled. For the 2018-19 season, replacement level is a 0.6 same-day rating in adults 18-49 for the Big 4 networks and a 0.1 for The CW. (Read more here.) The index number is taken by subtracting 0.6 (or 0.1) from a show’s average same-day rating.
Friday scripted shows (denoted with an “F” above) on the Big 4 have average ratings about 30 percent lower than those of other nights, therefore their ratings are multiplied by 1.43 (1/0.7, or 70 percent) before subtracting the replacement-level number.
Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.
(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
