“Evil” has gotten off to a lackluster start in the ratings this fall.

The new CBS drama is currently the network’s lowest-rated rookie series of the season, with its first two episodes averaging only a 0.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demo. As a result, the Bear is calling “Evil” likely to be canceled, but there are a few things that could cause him to reverse that prediction.

For starters, the series is CBS-owned, which means it has a slightly better shot at getting renewed than something like “All Rise,” which has been performing on par with “Evil,” and is also a likely cancellation. Secondly, “Evil” also has the benefit of coming from Michelle and Robert King, two TV creators who CBS has maintained a notably good relationship with.

So, if “Evil” stays at its current level, but manages to make up for its poor L+SD performance in delayed viewing, then the Bear could see the Kings’ involvement in the series protecting it from a season one cancellation. But for now, since the series is sitting at the bottom of CBS’ freshman lineup, the Bear thinks it’s a likely cancellation.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the amount above (or below) a replacement-level rating — i.e., the expected adults 18-49 rating of an emergency fill-in show should a series be canceled. For the 2019-20 season, replacement level is a 0.5 same-day rating in adults 18-49 for the Big 4 networks and a 0.1 for The CW. (Read more here.) The index number is taken by subtracting 0.5 (or 0.1) from a show’s average same-day rating.

Friday scripted shows (denoted with an “F” above) on the Big 4 have average ratings about 30 percent lower than those of other nights, therefore their ratings are multiplied by 1.43 (1/0.7, or 70 percent) before subtracting the replacement-level number.

Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.

(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.

[…] ‘Evil’ tells the story of a forensic psychologist whose skepticism is challenged when she finds herself allied with a priest and a technical contractor to investigate what appear to be supernatural incidents. The series stars Katja Herbers as Dr. Kristen Bouchard, the aforementioned skeptic, with Mike Colter as David Acosta, the priest, and Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shroff, the contractor. The first two episodes of ‘Evil’ scored an average of 1.3 in Live+7 ratings in adults 18-49, drawing 7.57 million viewers. This makes its renewal something of a surprise, considering that the Cancel Bear had it down as “likely to be canceled by May 2020.” […]
