As the Bear stated in his CBS post last week, he had moved “Fam” from the likely renewal it was classified as in its initial few weeks, down to a tossup. Today, however, the Bear is calling it a likely cancellation.
The Nina Dobrev-led freshman comedy got off to an OK start in the ratings earlier this year, but took an expected hit in its second week, and has been fairly consistently scoring 0.9 and 0.8 ratings among adults 18-49 ever since. It’s sitting at a 0.9 average right now, placing it just a little above the 0.85 averages of “Murphy Brown” and “Happy Together,” both of which are DSWs.
With the absence of “The Big Bang Theory” in CBS’ programming lineup next season, the Bear has a feeling that come next fall, the network will want to try its luck at another comedy hit with a freshman title, rather than giving an OK ratings performer like “Fam” a second chance to stand out.
Now, the Bear is less certain about the future of “Fam” than he’d like to be, and may change the series back to a tossup or likely renewal, depending on the show’s continued performance and whatever renewal decisions CBS may make in the coming weeks. But as of right now, the Bear is calling “Fam” likely to be canceled.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the amount above (or below) a replacement-level rating — i.e., the expected adults 18-49 rating of an emergency fill-in show should a series be canceled. For the 2018-19 season, replacement level is a 0.6 same-day rating in adults 18-49 for the Big 4 networks and a 0.1 for The CW. (Read more here.) The index number is taken by subtracting 0.6 (or 0.1) from a show’s average same-day rating.
Friday scripted shows (denoted with an “F” above) on the Big 4 have average ratings about 30 percent lower than those of other nights, therefore their ratings are multiplied by 1.43 (1/0.7, or 70 percent) before subtracting the replacement-level number.
Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.
(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
