As many of you likely already know, “Law & Order: SVU” was renewed by NBC for a record-breaking twenty-first season last week, as the Bear had predicted it would be. It is now the network’s 11th show to be renewed for next season.

By the time everything is said and done, though, the Bear has a hard time believing “The Enemy Within” will manage to find its way onto that renewed list. The freshman NBC drama premiered with an OK 1.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demo, putting it, initially, in a strange position on NBC’s renew/cancel standings.

As the Bear noted a few weeks back, “The Enemy Within” would have had to stick close to that 1.2 in its subsequent weeks, avoiding the usual post-premiere ratings drop that nearly all freshman shows experience, in order to have a viable shot at a second season.

“The Enemy Within” has failed to do that, falling to 0.9 and 0.8s the past 4 weeks, giving it a current 0.92 average. While that might be a strong enough average to lift shows in their third, or even second seasons, into likely renewal territory, it’s just not good enough for a freshman title this year.

The Bear is calling it now – “The Enemy Within” is likely to be canceled.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the amount above (or below) a replacement-level rating — i.e., the expected adults 18-49 rating of an emergency fill-in show should a series be canceled. For the 2018-19 season, replacement level is a 0.6 same-day rating in adults 18-49 for the Big 4 networks and a 0.1 for The CW. (Read more here.) The index number is taken by subtracting 0.6 (or 0.1) from a show’s average same-day rating.

Friday scripted shows (denoted with an “F” above) on the Big 4 have average ratings about 30 percent lower than those of other nights, therefore their ratings are multiplied by 1.43 (1/0.7, or 70 percent) before subtracting the replacement-level number.

Shows that have ended their seasons have their R/C Index number frozen at the point of their final episode.

(O) – Owned: All other things equal, shows owned by studios affiliated with their networks have a better shot at renewal than those from outside producers.
