It’s as if Fox was conspiring against the cancellation bear editorial schedule when they renewed Empire, Gotham and Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Saturday. None of it was a surprise, but it required the bear to rewrite this week’s post (which was already done, and headlined “Empire Is Certain To Be Renewed”.)

After Saturday’s renewals, the bear’s downgrading Sleepy Hollow from “certain” to “likely” renewal. He still likes its chances, but there is some concern that “If they renewed Brooklyn Nine-Nine why didn’t they renew Sleepy Hollow at the same time?” That’s enough for the bear to make the small adjustment.

Fox decided to get in on the TCA trend by renewing Gotham, Empire, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Out of that list, one show surprised by not being there – Sleepy Hollow – while another slightly surprised by being announced this early – Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

For Sleepy Hollow, while ratings have dropped this year, its Fall ratings were still above the Fox average. I’d note that New Girl wasn’t renewed either, and it would take literally every Fox Spring show succeeding to put this in any danger. That said, how Fox’s Spring does will likely determine how many episodes Sleepy Hollow comes back for next season.

For Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while the ratings are steady on Sunday and the show’s renewal wasn’t in doubt, this may have simply been a PR maneuver. Many (myself included) wondered how Fox (the network) being run by the same people as Fox (the producers) would affect their renewal decisions… so Fox put out a batch of renewals consisting of one Fox show (Empire), one WB show (Gotham), and one Universal show (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). We’ll see if that trend continues once Fox decides which of their pilots to shoot

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. If you want to interact with the bear, Twitter, not these post’s comments, is the place to do that. It’s more fun for the bear and reaches far more people. While this post will likely be viewed many tens of thousands of times, the commenting audience is a tiny fraction of that (a few hundred comments is typical). Tens of thousands of fans follow the bear on Twitter.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index “frozen” at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
