Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results through December 4, 2011):

Disgruntled fans will be sure to note that the only shows I seem to mention in these NBC Renew/ Cancel headlines are Harry’s Law, Community and Grimm. There’s a good reason for that. Harry’s Law is the only NBC show certainly headed for cancellation that’s still on the schedule. While Community ratings are, as usual, low the economics of syndication gives the show a reasonable chance for a fourth season (oops, I mean the futile Save Our Show efforts of fans do!). And Grimm seems to be a tiny, somewhat brighter than coal spot on NBC’s Fall schedule.

Harry’s Law is still certain to be canceled unless it gets a Sunday ratings miracle. Parenthood is still certain to be renewed, but fans are still certain to complain about its scheduling, and likewise Law & Order:SVU while likely the most expensive show on NBC is certain to be renewed (unless Dick Wolf & cast in a shocking surprise were to decide to call it quits) at ratings levels that would have it shown the exit on CBS, ABC or Fox.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
