NBC’s “Superstore” got a second-season renewal earlier in the week, and consequently it gets a bump up the TV by the Numbers new show power rankings.
Things are otherwise relatively stable, but that’s likely to change soon. A couple first-year series are about to return from long breaks, and some newcomers will join the mix in the next couple weeks too. Expect the next rankings to look rather different.
Canceled shows are dropped from the rankings after they go off the air. Shows that end their seasons but are still in the mix for renewal will remain ranked.
22. ‘Second Chance’
Last time: 22
FOX is just running out the clock on Fridays here.
Last time: 21
It’s been under 1.0 for a couple weeks running now, is about to take another week off opposite the Oscars and then get kicked to 7 p.m. ET. In other words, hopes of a ratings jump are about nil.
20. ‘The Grinder’
Last time: 19
Same-day ratings have been abysmal of late. But wait — FOX only cares about three- and seven-day ratings, right? Alas, the picture is not much better there: In Live +3, “The Grinder” still only manages a 1.1 in adults 18-49, and in Live +7 it’s just a 1.3.
19. ‘The Muppets’
Last time: 17
It’s time to cut the music, it’s time to dim the lights.
18. ‘Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life’
Last time: 16
Its marginally better ratings than those of “Bordertown” are the result of airing closer to the end of an NFL game a couple times. Both shows are likely headed to the same place.
17. ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’
Last time: 20
Its move up the chart is more reflective of the shows behind it floundering, but “CEG” is doggedly holding onto that little audience.
Last time: 18
The news of “Superstore’s” second-season pickup came with nary a mention of “Telenovela.” That’s not good.
Last time: 15
The thinnest of silver linings: It took longer than any other first-year FOX comedy to go under 1.0.
14. ‘Code Black’
Last time: 13
The Feb. 24 finale drew a 1.2 rating, right where “Code Black” resided for much of its first (only?) season.
13. ‘Dr. Ken’
Last time: 14
Although it’s down a bit recently, “Dr. Ken” has stayed consistently ahead of where “Cristela” was in the same timeslot last season.
12. ‘Scream Queens’
Last time: 12
Still renewed, in case you were wondering.
Last time: 11
Expect the show to get substantial promo time during the Oscars.
Last time: 10
A season-low 1.1 for its last outing. Guys, you’re going the wrong way.
Last time: 8
It slides one spot this week despite its “X-Files” lead-in growing for the finale. It’s probably still safe since FOX needs a lot of shows for next season, but it’s not looking as good as its early returns would have indicated.
8. ‘Shades of Blue’
Last time: 9
Consistent, yes, but it’s stuck in the very low 1s since its renewal.
Last time: 7
Back next week for a short run without “Empire” as its lead-out. Likely safe regardless, but it will be interesting to see how the show does.
Last time: 5
It’s up, it’s down, it’s up, it’s down. Its inconsistency is in a weird way becoming very consistent.
5. ‘Legends of Tomorrow’
Last time: 4
The No. 3 DC Comics show on The CW is also the No. 3 show on The CW.
Last time: 6
It’s heartening to see NBC not waste time on renewing the show for a second season.
3. ‘Chicago Med’
Last time: 3
“Med” has fallen off a bit since the calendar turned, but it’s churning out mid-1 ratings week to week. NBC is plenty OK with that.
2. ‘Life in Pieces’
Last time: 2
The No. 2 new series of the season, in the most under-the-radar way possible.
Last time: 1
Returns from the long winter break next week. “Blindspot’s” last episode of 2015 was its only one below 2.0. Can it get back over that mark?
Dropped from rankings: “Angel from Hell,” “Heroes Reborn,” “Truth Be Told,” “Wicked City,” “The Player,” “Minority Report,” “Blood & Oil”
